Journalism Assignment - Who's on First?

In an effort to examine reliability of our articles and to compare and improve our writing as a class, we are going to complete an activity I like to call "Who's on First?"

As a class, we are to do the following role-playing. USING seven students, prepare a "hall incident" that carries a school suspension punishment. Have the protagonist tell his story, the antagonist tell his, a friend of each should give his rendition, a teacher who happened on the scene should explain the incident, three uninvolved passers-by should tell what happened, and the principal (who was not there) should comment on the event.

For homework, each class member should be the reporter and attempt to write an objective account of the happening in the form of a news article. The article, which is to be a minimum of 500 words, will be due on Monday, in the form of a BLOGSPOT POST ON MUSKETEERJOURNALISM.BLOGSPOT.COM.

We will discuss the posts in a week...

A couple of points.

1. I realize I am asking 7 of you to volunteer and act in this roleplay. I know you can do it.

2. There will be bonus points (25) for the actors.

3. If you don't have the acting, you can't have the roleplay. If you don't have the roleplay, you can't write the stories. If you don't write the stories, you don't get the credit.

4. I have not forgotten those who have not presented their PowerPoints. We will get to those at the next available moment.

5. We have a guest speaker (Terry Hapney, Professor of Communications and Journalism at Marshall University) coming to speak to us on Friday. Please have at least a question or two formulated for about the industry, his occupation, his school, etc. for the Q and A session that will take place after his lecture.

6. Also, Thursday will be our pitch meeting. Get your story ideas ready.

GCHS Student is “Brutally Beaten”
Sexist and sexual comments lead to assault

On Tuesday, September 9, school officials, students, parents, and even the law enforcement were involved after a student was injured at Greenup County High School. Between third and fourth lunch, Allison Rowe assaulted Drew Hannah – both students at the school. Hannah required medical attention and received six stitches once taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center. Charges against Rowe have been filed.
Hannah, a senior football player, and Rowe, a sophomore, have always had tension between them. Hannah admitted that the fight occurred over both sexual and sexist remarks he had made to Rowe.
“I’ve been making fun of Allison all year,” Hannah said. “She’s loud and obnoxious. I want to push her down in some mud or something.”
At lunch that day, Hannah had been standing in the gravel pit with a friend, Tahler Peveto. Both of them were making comments about Rowe.
“I’m Drew’s best friend,” said Peveto, a junior. “He said a lot of things about Allison, but I didn’t think she’d take them so seriously.”
Rowe’s friend, Shelby Chaney, overheard the remarks and immediately told Rowe, who was also standing in the gravel pit of the school. Rowe approached the two, wanting to know if comments were being said. However, when she did, Hannah touched her inappropriately and made yet another sexual comment to her.
“He crossed the line, physically and mentally,” said Rowe. “I was tired of it, and it needed to stop.”
Chaney provided Rowe with a glass Fanta bottle that she used to attack Hannah with shortly after. She struck him in the face near his eye.
“I was blind sighted,” said Hannah. “I shouldn’t have been attacked; I was just stating my opinion. I was brutally beaten.”
The fight was split up quickly when Mr. Reed, a teacher at GCHS, notified Principal Tots. Reed admitted to noticing tension between the two in the past, but he didn’t realize that it would cause such an incident.
“I did notice tension between the two,” he said, “but I ignored it. I didn’t think it would turn out like this. The fight was like a cheetah attacking a helpless squirrel.”
Principal Tots arrived at the scene shortly and tackled Rowe before she could harm Hannah any further.
“My first instinct was to remove the Fanta bottle physically from her hand,” said Mr. Tots. “I do not condone this kind of behavior. We will not tolerate stereotyping at this school.”
Besides the charges, Rowe received a three-day suspension from school for physical violence. Hannah also received a three-day suspension and counseling for the sexist and sexual remarks. Hannah was released from the hospital the following day, and court dates are pending.

Sexism Proved At GCHS
The Brutal Beating of Drew Hannah
By: Allison Rowe
Tuesday, September 9th, between third and fourth lunch at Greenup County High School, students lurk cautiously keeping their ears wide open. One student becomes brutally beaten by another student because of several sexually harassing comments and actions. Drew Hannah, a senior football player, was the victim of the fight against Allison Rowe, a sophomore cheerleader. Hannah received a hard hit to the eye and obtained six stitches received at Southern Ohio Medical Center. Everyone involved with this incident was talked to and this is what was made of the story.
Hannah had been distressing Rowe for quite some time. Though, no tension was noticed between the two by elders, until the fight.
“I had been saying some sexist things to Allison about her not being able to play sports well, because she is girl,” admitted Hannah. “I also occasionally slapped her on the bottom.”
Rowe was tired of Hannah picking on her and insulting her in front of her peers. “I had to show Drew that he couldn’t pick on me anymore and get away with it,” said Rowe. “I knew the only way he would stop was if I taught him a lesson. My best friend Shelby agreed with me also encouraging me to do what I had to do.”
Shelby Chaney is Allison Rowe’s best friend and is thought to be a big cause of the fight. Chaney provided Rowe with the weapon of choice, a glass orange Fanta bottle. This Rowe used to gouge Hannah in the eye with and other random parts of the body were harmed also. Chaney claimed to tell Rowe that Hannah was speaking about her to his friend, Tahler Peveto in a rude manner.
“I heard Drew say that he hated Allison and that he just wanted to push her down in the mud,” said Chaney.
“I saw Shelby hand Allison a glass bottle and I knew they were up to no good,” said by stander Ashley Kielmar. “I watched first as Allison just went up to Drew looking at him strangely and he slapped her on the bottom.”
After Rowe was touched inappropriately she was said to walk away back to Chaney. Then Peveto saw her reappearing behind Hannah.
“I saw Allison coming up behind Drew while we were talking. She had a death stare upon her face and I didn’t inform Drew because I thought what was about to happen would be funny,” said Peveto. “Then Allison came over Drew’s shoulder and drilled him in the face with the Fanta bottle.”
Mr. Reed was the teacher on lunch duty during this time. He was in the gravel pit and watched as the event occurred. “I saw Allison pounce on Drew like a cheetah would pounce on an innocent squirrel, ”quivered Reed. “I am a very emotional person and couldn’t handle the horrifying event that was happening, so I screamed for Principal Tots to come quickly.”
Principal Tots arrived swiftly double taking at the two students. His first instinct was that he had to get Rowe off of Hannah to prevent further destruction. “I tackled Allison into the ground roughly to stop her from further injuring Drew,” said Tots.
This was one of the most brutal fights in a while at GCHS and punishment was given to both students. Three days suspension for attacking Hannah was given to Rowe and to avoid confrontation Hannah was suspended for three days once Rowe returned. Hannah also received counseling for sexism and sexual remarks once back in school. This is proof that sexism does exist in local schools and that students that seem perfectly normal and unharmed can be provoked to commit such acts violence.

Scandal in the Gravel Pit

On Tuesday, September 9th a brutal, gruesome fight took place in the Greenup County High School gravel pit. The fight occurred between sophomore cheerleader Allison Rowe and senior football player Drew Hannah. Rowe attacked Hannah with a glass orange Fanta bottle during the lunch change from 3rd to 4th lunch.

Since the beginning of the school year Hannah had been harassing Rowe by both verbal and physical means. “He’s been making sexist comments, saying stuff like girls can’t do stuff like sports. I think he crossed the line physically, like touching my bottom many times.” Says Rowe. Rowe had heard from good friend, Shelby Chaney that Hannah had been saying mean things about her during lunch. “I told Allison that I had heard Drew say ‘I hate Allison. I want to shove her in some mud’ and presented her with a glass Fanta bottle and said ‘you know what you need to do’ I watched her and cheered her on. Drew hits her bottom all the time and says she can’t play sports because she’s a girl” Chaney tells us.

Chaney had smuggled the glass bottle into the school, (as the school does not sell glass bottles). “I was tired of it and he needed to stop. So I hit him with an orange Fanta bottle in the face, he got a cut on his eye.” Says Rowe. Passerby Ashley Kielmar states that when she was done with eating her lunch she saw Chaney with the bottle. When the bell rang to go to class, she saw Rowe brutally beating Hannah with the Fanta bottle. “Mr. Tots attacked Allison. I saw Mr. Reed crying his eyes out. The fight was pretty gruesome, I felt unsafe.” Says Kielmar.

“My first instinct was to stop the violence. I sustained her by attacking her and taking the bottle out of her hands.” Says Principal Tots. Tots informed us that Rowe would receive a three-day suspension automatically for attacking Hannah. Hannah will be suspended three days after Rowe comes back to avoid another attack. When Hannah comes back to school he will be forced to take counseling because of his negative views on women. “As a principle I do not approve of this act” Tots tells us.

Mr. Reed, the teacher on lunch duty that day, tells that the fight was “like a cheetah attacking a helpless squirrel.” Reed’s view on the fight was “Allison was attacking Drew with a glass Fanta bottle, I’m sensitive to this and started screaming and crying for Mr. Tots.” Reed states that he has noticed some tension between Hannah and Rowe. “I think that Drew has something for Allison and Allison just likes Fanta.”

Hannah’s story on the fight was much like the others stories. He admits to making fun of Rowe too much in and out of class, and picking on her all the time. “I guess I did it so I would feel better about myself” Hannah admits. Before the fight Hannah had been talking to his best friend, Tahler Peveto, when he saw Chaney walking past him towards Rowe. “I hate Allison. I want to shove her in some mud or something” Hannah shouted out loud enough for Chaney to hear. As Rowe was walking by Hannah, he hit her bottom and said “that a boy Allison” at that moment was when Rowe turned and slammed the glass bottle against Hannah’s head. “I felt something hit me. It was a glass orange Fanta bottle.” Hannah explains. “Its embarrassing getting attacked by a girl. I don’t think that I deserved to be attacked. She’s a coward and can’t play sports.”

Peveto confirmed all the stories with the same response in detail of what happened. “Drew tells me everything. He hates Allison. When he saw Shelby walking past he shouted something like ‘I hate Allison and I want to shove her in the mud’” says Peveto. “I saw her come up behind him, but I didn’t ay anything tot him because I thought it would be funny. Mr. Tots attacked her and Mr. Reed was crying and scared.”

Hannah was sent to Southern Ohio Medical Center. He received six stitches above his eye. Hannah explains “Its embarrassing getting attacked by a girl. I don’t think that I deserved to be attacked. She’s a coward and can’t play sports.”

The Gravel Pit Show Down
Chelsey Hayes

It was Tuesday September 9th and the most common event took place in the gravel pit. It was utterly breath taking so to speak. During the 3rd and 4th lunch changes there was a confrontation between Alison Rowe a sophomore and Drew Hannah a senior.
We had a chance to talk to everyone that was involved and that also witness the confrontation. It all started when Drew crossed the line physical by touching Alison’s bottom more than once and saying ridiculous accusations like girls aren’t good enough. Allison was tired of him disrespecting her so she decided to hit Drew in the face with an orange fanta, glass bottle.
We talked to Drew about the incident that occurred and he doesn’t think he should have been attacked because he’s entitled to an opinion. He thinks it’s also embarrassing getting hit by a girl and he went to the hospital, he had to get 6 stitches. Shelby was walking past Drew and Tahler in the lunchroom when Drew said, “gosh I hate Allison so much, I’d like to push her down in some mud.” Shelby was the one to give Allison the orange fanta bottle and told her “you know what you need to do.” She was sitting there cheering Allison on.
Mr. Reed was on cafeteria duty when the fight broke out. “like watching the animal channel, a cheetah attacking a helpless squirrel.” Say’s Reed. Tot’s was first aware of tension between Alison and Drew when the fight had occurred.

The witness Ashley Kielmar was going to lunch when she saw Shelby with the drink but she didn’t think nothing of it. The next thing she saw was Allison beating Drew with the bottle and Tot’s tackling Allison. She also noticed Mr. Reed was bawling his eyes out. “Fights can be pretty gruesome, pretty interesting.” Kielmar. She also comments that she feels unsafe at Greenup County High.
All in all the result of this mishap was resolved by giving Allison a 3 day suspension and when she returned, Tot’s gave Drew a 3 day suspension and counseling for negative views of women.

Fight Erupts In Gravel Pit
By Josh Howerton

On Tuesday, September 9th, a fight erupted in the middle of the gravel pit at Greenup County High School during the lunch change of third and fourth lunches. The fight was between senior football player Drew Hannah, age 18, and sophomore cheerleader Allison Rowe, age 15. The fight between the two was triggered by sexist comments and physical sexual harassment that Hannah made towards Rowe earlier in the day and the school year itself.
In classes and throughout the school year, Hannah had been making sexist comments towards Rowe about what girls cannot do.
“In class, Drew had been making sexist comments towards me and was also saying how he didn’t like me,” said the victim Allison Rowe to the En Garde! Newspaper staff.
This also led into sexual harassment towards Rowe by Hannah, who crossed the line by physically touching Rowe in places that she did not feel comfortable with him touching.
“Drew crossed the line physically when he started to touch my bottom with his fingers many times,” said Rowe.
While at lunch, one of Rowe’s best friends, sophomore Shelby Chaney, was walking by Hannah who was talking to one of his best friends, junior Tahler Peveto. While walking past the two, Chaney overheard Hannah saying many bad things about Rowe.
“While walking past Drew, I heard him saying to Tahler that Allison was a retard and that he hated her so much that he wanted to push her down into some mud,” said Chaney. “When I got over to Allison, I told her what Drew had said and handed her my orange Fanta bottle and told her she knew what she needed to do.”
After being handed the bottle by Chaney, Rowe walked up behind Hannah while he was talking to Peveto and hit him in the back of the face with the bottle. Hannah fell to the ground after being hit and Rowe quickly jumped on top of him and began to hit him in the face.
“I felt Allison hit me with the bottle and it must have been my blind side because I did not see the attack coming,” said Hannah about the attack.
After the hit with the bottle, the students in the gravel pit saw the fight and began to circle around the beating that Rowe was giving to Hannah. This was seen by one of the teachers that were on lunch duty, Mr. Reed, who was with the principal, Mr. Tots.
“I was on my lunch duty talking to Mr. Tots when the fight broke loose. It was like watching the Animal Channel, as Allison was like a cheetah attacking Drew, who was like a helpless squirrel,” said Mr. Reed on what he saw of the fight.
Mr. Reed did not try to break up the fight himself; instead he got Mr. Tots to break up the fight. Mr. Tots ran into the gravel pit and tackled Rowe and sustained her physically.
“My first instinct when I saw the fight was to sustain Allison by tackling her to the ground,” said Mr. Tots about how he broke up the fight.
“Tots came and tackled Allison, while Mr. Reed was scared and crying during the fight,” said Peveto on how the fight was broken up.
After Rowe and Hannah were sustained from continuing the fight, they were both took to the main office and placed in separate rooms.
Hannah, who was severely bleeding, had to wait on an ambulance to be taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC). At SOMC, Hannah had to have six stitches placed over his right eye near his eyebrow.
Rowe had to wait on her parents to get to the school, and then received her punishment of three days of out of school suspension.
The next day, when Hannah returned to school, he was taken to the office and was given his punishment of being suspended the three days after Rowe returned to school, and was also given two months of counseling for sexual harassment and for negative views of women.
“Getting beat up by a girl, especially one that is younger than me, is very embarrassing. But what it made it more embarrassing was that most of my friends were there to see it. I don’t think that I deserved to have been attacked by Allison, I was just joking around with her, I didn’t think that she would take it personal and attack me,” said Hannah on the fight. “I have pressed assault and battery charges against Allison.”
“I do not condone this type of violence and behavior as a principal and especially in my school,” announced Mr. Tots to the student body after the fight.

Feud Between Two Sends One To the Hospital:
Tuesday, September 9th a dispute between two students occurred. The incident happened during the 3rd and 4th lunch change between Senior Drew Hannah, and Sophomore Allison Rowe.
Reports indicate that Hannah had been very hostile toward Rowe from the very beginning of school. “Drew has never really liked me, he always made sexist comments to me.” Rowe said. When asked what types comments Hannah made toward her, Rowe went on to say, “Well it was normally things like how girls shouldn’t play sports, cheerleading is a joke, basically things to put girls down.” “I hate Allison” Hannah was reported saying, “I want to push her in mud, because I’m a straight up gangster.” These comments that Hannah made toward Rowe were not what triggered this incident. A few eyewitnesses were there to actually spot what happened. Shelby Chaney one of Rowe’s closest friend was there and had actually seen what caused this feud. Chaney was walking in the gravel pit, and had past Hannah and Tahler Peveto, Hannah’s best friend. And over heard the two talking at a very volume about how much they disliked Rowe. When Rowe and Chaney past the two to enter the lunchroom, Chaney said “Drew than took his hand and placed it on Allison’s hind end and said “That a boy Allison.” That’s when I handed Allison a Fanta bottle and told her “You know what to do.” Rowe then took the Fanta bottle; with revenge on her mind she then smacked Hannah in the head several times until Principal Mr. Tots brought it to an end.
Mr. Reed who was on gravel pit duty at the time had also seen what happened. Reed has reported noticing the tension between the two students from the very beginning. “When Allison attacked Drew it was like a cheetah attacking a helpless squirrel.” His then sudden shriek of terror had caught Mr. Tot’s attention then he proceeded to end the fight. Tots had this to say about the situation, “When I noticed the two fighting, I then sustained Miss. Rowe with physical force.” When asked what the punishments the two will face? Tots said the two will each be suspended for 3 days. Hannah’s suspension will not begin until Miss. Rowes has returned to end any confrontation between the two. “Hannah also has to attend counseling for negative views on women.”
Ashley Kielmar, a bystander at the time said she had seen Chaney hand Rowe a Fanta bottle over to Rowe. “Fights here at Greenup can be pretty gruesome, and sometimes very interesting.” Kielmar said, when asked how she feels about violence at her school she replied, “Occasionally I can feel unsafe, but most of the time I feel safe.”
After the attack reports indicate that Hannah was taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center where he had six stitches placed on his right eye. There have been no charges placed on either of the two. The only crime here is that Hannah is in fact a “SEXIST”.

The Hit in the Pit

Teachers have dried their eyes. Wounds have been stitched and punishments given out since the “hit in the pit” occurred in the gravel pit between 3rd and 4th lunch on Tuesday. The two students involved were Drew Hannah and Allison Rowe.
Shelby Chaney, one of Allison’s good friends, told her about some things that Hannah had said about her. “I presented her with the bottle and said ‘you know what you need to do’,” said Chaney. The bottle she handed her was smuggled in since the school does not sell glass bottles. She watched her best friend find Hannah, Hannah seen Rowe and smacked her butt.
“He’s been making sexist comments and been saying things like girls can’t play sports and is basically saying that women are inferior to men. He’s even sexually harassed me by touching my bottom,” said Rowe when asked why she attacked him. “I was tired of it and he needed to stop. I think you need to stand up for yourself. I hit him with the bottle in the face.”
I make fun of Rowe too much in and out of class. I pick on her all the time because it makes me feel batter about myself,” said Hannah. “I was talking to my best friend, Tahler. I saw Shelby and said I hated Allison and that I wanted to shove her in some mud or something. Allison walked by and I hit her on her butt and said ‘Thatta bot, Allison. Then I felt something hit me. It was a glass, orange Fanta bottle. It’s embarrassing getting beat attacked by a girl. She’s a coward and can’t play sports.”
The bottle hit Hannah right above his right eye. The hit opened a gash that rendered him unconscious. Hannah was rushed to the Souther Ohio Medical Center where he had to have six stitches to close the wound. Mr. Reed was the teacher on lunch duty that day. When the students began fighting he broke down in tears. “I’m very emotional about these things so I called for Principal Tots,” said Reed. Principal Tots came running in and tackled Rowe to the ground.
“My first instinct was to stop the violence and sustain her by attacking her. Allison received a three-day suspension automatically for attacking Drew. Drew was suspended for three days after Allison came back to avoid another attack. When Drew came back he received two months of counseling for his negative views. As principal I do not approve of this act,” retorted principal Tots.
After the incident there was music playing through the speakers to mellow the students. “It was pretty gruesome and I feel unsafe here,” explained Ashley Kilmer, a student witness of the event.

Student Takes Things To Far
On Tuesday, September 9th a brutal and gruesome attack took place here at Greenup County High School. During the transition between 3rd and 4th lunch, Allison Rowe savagely attacked her fellow classmate Drew Hannah with a Fanta bottle. The reason for this attack, Hannah had been making several sexist comments and also sexually harassing Rowe in other classes and in the hallway.
“I guess Drew just doesn’t like me he’s always making sexist comments,” Stated Rowe “like girls cant play sports and girls can’t fight.” Rowe who is a varsity cheerleader for GCHS was walking out of lunch when Shelby Chaney, who overheard Hannah and his friend Tahler Peveto talking about Rowe, told her what was said. Rowe then received a Fanta bottle from Chaney and proceeded to walk by Hannah. After passing by, Hannah smacked her bottom and said “that a boy Allison.” This is when she turned around and began the gruesome assault. After about 2 minutes of gut wrenching violence Chris Tots, principal of GCHS was forced to tackle Rowe to try and contain her.
“I gave her the Fanta bottle and told her ‘you know what you have to do’ and I cheered her on.” Said Chaney “He is constantly making comments and sexually harassing her.” Chaney had smuggled the Fanta bottle into school earlier that morning, after walking by Hannah and his best friend Peveto and hearing Hannah say “I want to push Allison into some mud.” Chaney sought out revenge by telling Rowe and giving her the Fanta bottle. “ I think that what Drew and Tahler had said was wrong and that Drew Deserved what happened to him.”
“I had seen a lot of tension between the two, (makes butt smacking motion),” stated Reed “but I never expected it to explode into something like that.” Reed who saw the fight take place just feet away was powerless to stop Rowe, the only way he could describe it was that “it was like watching a cheetah attack a small squirrel.” After taking a moment to set down and cry, Reed soon stepped into action by calling Tots over, Tots then jumped into the fight and tackled Rowe to the ground.
Tots stated, “We do not condone this type of violence, we also will not tolerate negative views on women.” After much deliberation no charges were pressed on Rowe although she will be suspended for 3 days. “Hannah will be suspended 3 days following Rowes return.” Stated Tots “and also receive 2 months of counseling for his comments.”
“I really don’t think I deserved to be attacked.” Said Hannah “I hate Allison she is so loud and obnoxious I still want to push her down in some mud.” Before the attack Hannah had been standing by the water fountain with Peveto when Chaney walked by “I guess we said something about Allison loud enough that Shelby could hear it.” After being attacked Hannah stated, “It’s embarrassing and Allison is a coward.”
Hannah was transported to Southern Ohio Medical Center for his injuries, which consisted of a laceration by his right eye that required 6 stitches he also suffered a mild concussion. “I don’t really remember that much about the trip to the hospital,” stated Hannah “but my doctor did give me this awesome lollipop.”

Wanna Fanta??

Yesterday, Tuesday September 9,2008 a fight broke out in the halls here at Greenup County High School. This fight was between sophomore Allison Rowe and senior Drew Hannah. It occurred between the 3rd and 4th lunch bells.
The story from both sides sums up the fight as brutal. Rowe approached Hannah from behind with a glass Fanta bottle in hand and with revenge in mind. She struck him in the head harshly. The hit was so hard it broke the Fanta bottle in two. After the hit he fell to the ground and Rowe got in 3 to 4 hits before being retained. It was finally broken up by principle Mr. Tots after about 7 minutes. Hannah was later taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center and received 6 stitches.
From the start of the year, there has been tension between Rowe and Hannah leading to sexist comments and sexual harassment. Rowe states that on several encounters, Hannah has made many comments such as, “girls are stupid and can’t play sports.” She also sates that he has crossed the line into unwanted touching such as slapping her on the bottom.
She goes as far to say, “I am emotionally scared for life.” She states that what she had done was wrong but she had enough.
She claimed, “ At the time I was over taken with hate and my actions there followed without me even thinking about it.”
Hannah does not deny making the remarks or the groping. He says only, “I just really do not like Allison and I make fun of her because she is so loud and obnoxious and I hate that.” He thinks that what he has said in the past might have been uncalled for but not deserving of this harsh thrashing.
Rowe claims to have been told the news by a close friend, Shelby Chaney. Chaney claims that she was walking by the water fountain and overheard Hannah telling a close friend, Tahler Peveto, that, “Allison is a retard ”. Moments after hearing the statement, Chaney went and reported the news to Rowe, while giving her a glass Fanta bottle that was smuggled into the school.
Then Chaney made the statement to Rowe, “You know what to do.” She says that she watched Rowe beat Hannah shamelessly with a sense of womanly pride. She thinks what Rowe did was not uncalled for and was very necessary.
Hannah’s friend Peveto, claims that what Allison did was very wrong. Peveto doesn’t like Chaney or Rowe either and states, “ Sure, I did see Drew slap Allison’s bottom before but it was harmless fun and she took it way to seriously.” She also claims to have seen Rowe approaching Hannah in the gravel pit at the scene of the crime but she didn’t say anything because the happenings were very unexpected.
A passing student, Ashley Keelmar was passing by in the heat of the moment and watched the fight. She claims that it was a very brutal fight. Overall Keelmar enjoyed the raw action but later went on to state, “ Seeing this make me feel a little unsafe at school.”
The teacher on gravel pit duty at the time was Mr. Reed, sophomore English teacher. He said, “It looked as if I was watching the animal channel and a cheetah was attacking a helpless squirrel.” Being overcome with his emotions, Mr. Reed began to cry and called our principal Mr. Tots to help break it up.
Mr. Tots retained Allison and stopped the fight. Rowe will be receiving 3 days of suspension and Hannah will receive 3 days of suspension starting the day Rowe comes back. Hannah will also receive counseling for his negative views on women. The following day Hannah was released from the hospital and pressing charges is still up in the air.

Weapon of Choice: Fanta Bottle?

At Greenup County high school on Tuesday, September 9th at around 11:40a.m. In the Gravel Pit, a student was attacked. A senior at Greenup that goes by the name of Drew Hannah was beaten over the face with a glass orange Fanta bottle. The student that attacked Drew was a sophomore girl, Allison Rowe.

It all started out with Drew harassing Allison daily. He would shout rude remarks and utter disrespectful sexist comments to her.

“I make fun of Allison so much because she’s loud and obnoxious”, said Drew. “I pick on her to make myself feel better.”

On this specific occasion, Drew was talking to Tahler in the Gravel Pit area during their lunch period. He then said something under his breath to Tahler about Allison and Shelby (Allison’s Best Friend), over heard as she was walking by. She then proceeded to go tell Allison about what she overheard.

“I handed her the bottle”, said Shelby. “I then told her she knew what she had to do.”

Shelby smuggled the glass Fanta bottle from home. Allison then calmly walked over to where Drew was standing stood behind him and the next thing Drew knew he was being taken to the hospital due to a cut under his right eye.

“I knew he was going to be hit, I just didn’t say anything because I thought it would be funny,” said Tahler.

“I don’t think I should have been attacked,” said Drew after the confrontation had happened. “I had to get 6 stitches, therefore I am pressing charges.”

“Drew doesn’t like me he always makes sexist remarks”, said Allison. “I had finally had enough.”

“I was talking to Mr. Tots in the Gravel Pit when the incident took place,” said Mr. Reed (an English Teacher at GCHS). I then saw the cheetah attack a helpless girl; well that was what it looked like. I was so emotional all I could do was yell for Mr. Tots.

As soon as I was aware of Allison attacking Drew the only thing I knew to do was sustain her by using Physical force said Mr. Tots (GCHS’ Principal). He then Allison received a 3 day suspension and Drew was suspended 3 days also that is after Allison came back to school so there would not be another confrontation with the two.

Fights between high school students are very common even though 16% were fighting last year and now only 14% are this year, that’s still 14% too many. According to CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), 33% of high school students reported being in a physical fight one or more times in the last 12 months preceding the survey.

The students are lucky at Greenup County High School for the reason that they could have been expelled. There are schools in other states that have a minimum of five to ten day suspension and some even have a “Zero Tolerance Policy”. “The Zero Tolerance Policy” states that the student will be expelled if any violent act is created because of a student fight.

A Pop for a Pop

Brett Reed

Tuesday September 9th, between 3rd and 4th lunch, local G.C.H.S students clashed heads over an old-fashioned battle of the sexes match. Drew Hannah, Senior here at G.C.H.S was brutally corrected by Allison Rowe (sophomore) who claims, “he had it coming to him.”

Passers by all stopped to get a look at justice in the form of a raged-teen. Using an Orange Fanta bottle, bought and snuck onto school grounds by her accomplice Shelby Cheney, Rowe struck Hannah across the right eye and fell almost instantly to the ground. The fight was broke up almost instantly by G.C.H.S Principal Mr. Tots, after Mr. Reed, a school therapist, turned the principals attention to the fight itself.

Bystanders all stated that they were finally glad to see the modern day Goliath be defeated by their smaller version of David. A furious student had one thing to say on the fight, “It was extremely stupid to be fighting over something this immature, if we cant just get along in a mature suitable way, then half of the student body needs to go back to elementary school where they belong.”

After the fight, Drew Hannah told us his side of the story. According to Hannah he does recall saying some provocative suggestions to Rowe, he also admits that he and Rowe have never been the best of friends. Hannah, after the incident, was taken to Kings Daughters Medical Hospital to receive six stitches just above his right eye.

“We in no way condone a life of violence here at G.C.H.S. For her actions Ms. Rowe will receive a three-day suspension from school. After digging deeper into this matter I have revealed that Mr. Hannah did have a huge part to play in this incident, and for the he will also receive a three day suspension after Ms. Rowe returns to school.”

In the early morning, yesterday at Greenup County High School, a student fight broke out. The incident took place around 11:40 am, in the Gravel Pit between 3rd and 4th lunch. The dispute was between Allison Rowe and Andrew Hannah. There were several students and faculty member who witnessed the fight. Taylor Pevetoe, a friend of Hannah’s was nearby and Shelby Chaney, Rowe’s accomplice was also a component to the scrap. There was a passerby, Ashley Kilmar who was an eyewitness to the incident. Kilmar was walking through the gravel pit as the fight was beginning. A bottle of orange Fanta was used as a weapon. Rowe used the bottle to thrust into Hannah’s head. Mr. Reed was at the scene but he did not do much to stop the fight. Principle Tots with physical force had to stop Rowe from causing any more damage.
Hannah says that him and Pevetoe were standing by the water fountain talking amongst them when Chaney walked by. Hannah seen Chaney and intentionally started to talk badly about Rowe.
“I hate Allison so much I want to push her down in some mud,” said Hannah as Chaney walked by.
Chaney then walked over to Rowe and handed her a glass bottle of orange Fanta, which she had smuggled into the school and said, “ you know what needs to be done”.
Rowe claims that she was walking by Hannah and Pevetoe standing near the water fountain and he slapped her on the butt and said “that a boy Allison”.
And then she met Chaney at the pop machine and she then handed Rowe the Fanta and told her what to do. Rowe then ran over to Hannah, Pevetoe seen her coming at him and refused to say anything to him. Rowe then blindsided him in the side of the head with the bottle. Mr. Reed witnessed the dispute and cowardly cried to Principle Tots to stop the fight.
Mr. Reed stated, “It looked like a cheetah on the animal channel attacking its prey”.
Mr. Reed says that he knew of the tension between the too but never thought that it would be taken this far.
Tots then ran and tackled Rowe to hinder her. Kilmar was walking by, she had just finished her lunch and was going back to class when she seen Rowe hit Hannah. She also witnessed Tots tackling Rowe.
Before the fight, verbal abuse was being disputed between Hannah and Rowe. Hannah had been harassing her for a while. Allison’s statement claimed that Hannah had been touching her improperly.
Allison said that in the classroom Hannah would utter things like “girls cant play sports” and such things like that.
Hannah says that Rowe is a coward for coming at him from behind. Hannah says that he hates Rowe; he said, “Allison is just annoying and loud, I hate her”. He says that he is innocent and thinks that he done no wrong. Rowe said she just had enough of Hannah and needed to stop him from talking about her and he needed to stop touching her inappropriately.
Hannah was rushed to Southern Ohio Medical Center and suffered only minor injuries. Hannah was soon released from the hospital. Allison had to damage done to her. Fighting at Greenup County High School is a level 4 misconduct because a weapon was used to harm a student intentionally. Principle Tots gave Rowe 3 days suspension from school; Hannah was suspended from school the following day that Rowe returned from her suspension from school. By school rules if either of the two students fights again they will possibly be expelled. Hannah’s punishment also included counseling, for sexual harassment, and he was to see a sexist counselor. By school rules if Charges were pressed by Hannah to Rowe because of the attack. Chaney did not receive any punishment for smuggling in a drink, and outside drinks are not allowed to enter the school. Nor did she receive punishment for supplying Rowe with the weapon.

Violence breaks out at gravel pit
Tuesday, September 9th, violence broke out involving two students (sophomore cheerleader Allison Rowe and senior football player Drew Hannah) during the passing of passing 3rd and 4th lunch at the gravel pit. Rowe had physically assaulted Hannah with a glass bottle. Sophomore Kielmore was a current onlooker of the incident and saw the assault from a close distance. “ I saw Allison getting a fanta then she was attacking him with it.” The glass did not break but in a result of the attack Hannah was transported to SOMC to receive stitches due to his injuries. The incident was caused by Hannah making a sexual advancement on Rowe.
Supposedly the tension between Rowe and Hannah had been longer than just that day. Rowe reported that Hannah had been bullying her all year with sexist comments like “girls can’t fight or play sports.” Rowe had also stated that Hannah has sexually harassed Rowe in the past by smacking her rear end. However, Hannah had claimed, “Allison is really loud and obnoxious”.
Tuesday had apparently been the last straw for Rowe when gossip got to her ear that Hannah was saying negative things about her. At the passing of 3rd and 4th lunch Rowe went to the soda machine and was sexually harassed by Hannah, it was then that Rowe had attacked Hannah with a glass bottle.
Sophomore cheerleader Tahler Peveto a close friend of Hannah confirmed his actions. “He never liked Allison and gave her a hard time for the whole year. At lunch he told me I hate Allison so much, I want her to push her in the mud. He smacked her in the butt and said atta boy. She then hit him with the glass bottle.”
Besides students most of the staff were in the dark with Hannah and Rowe’s “relationship”. Staff that knew Hannah and Rowe was surprised by the intense tension that was revealed due to the attack. School therapist Brett Reed who witnessed the attack was shocked with what he saw, “I noticed a little tension between them I just thought it was Drews’ way of showing affection.
Disciplinary actions are being handled by the school principal Christopher Miller. The two students will both receive punishments for the incident. “Allison Rowe will receive three days suspension for fighting. When she comes back Drew will be suspended for three days for his sexual harassment”. Mr. Miller also wants to take further actions on Hannah’s behavior by sending him to counseling. “This school doesn’t allow stereotyping and Drew needs to learn this, so to help him I’m recommending him for counseling because of his negative views on women”.
Tuesday was a very rowdy day in GCHS. As the week goes on students and staff just hope that the tension disappears.

“Fantasizing”
On Tuesday September 9th, 2008 between third and fourth lunch period Greenup County High School became a place for arguments and assault. Allison Rowe a sophomore varsity cheerleader and Drew Hannah a senior football player at GCHS started an argument, which resulted in Hannah receiving six stitches over his right eye and many more physical and emotional bruises. Mr. Reed the teacher on duty had this to say “ I was on gravel pit duty when I heard screaming, I looked over and thought I was watching the discovery channel. It was like a cheetah attacking a helpless squirrel and I felt like I was being suffocated because of all the hate in the room.”
In the gravel pit Hannah was talking to his best friend Tahler Peveto about how much he hated Rowe and her attitude. Peveto said this, “I was talking to Drew and he was talking about how much he hates her and wants to throw her in the mud.”
At that moment Rowe walked past when he smacked her across the bottom, Rowe turned and gave Hannah a death stare and continued to walk towards the pop machines to meet Chaney. The fight could be seen from anywhere in the gravel pit which of course resulted in many witnesses. Of the onlookers Rowe’s best friend Shelby Chaney was talking to Rowe prier to the fight about some remarks made by Hannah towards Rowe. “ He was making fun of girls, especially Allison,” said Chaney.
Already tired of the sexist marks and harassment made by Hannah, Rowe figured it was time to stop Hannah. Chaney handed Rowe her Fanta bottle over to Rowe and told her “ Do what needs to be done.”
Rowe runs up and blindsides Hannah with the bottle cutting his eye then tackling Hannah followed by multiple punches and kicks made by Rowe. Soon after Hannah was tackled Mr. Tots the principle at GCHS plowed through the students and physically sustained Rowe. Allison, “ After hearing what Chaney said I lost it, I was tired of all the remarks and harassment Hannah has made, so I stopped it.”
Hannah was not the victor in this fight but he understands why Rowe was angry with him, “ I make fun of Allison a lot, I just can’t stand her she’s annoying and when she walks by me I usually make it known by talking loud or smacking her but.”
A witness of the fight was Ashley Kielmar who was walking past Hannah before the fight started had this to say, “ I was just getting done with lunch, I walked into the gravel pit and was looking for somewhere to stand and wait for the bell. Next thing I knew Allison ran in front of me and tackled Drew, it all happened so fast.”
When all of the fighting was stopped Tots replied, “ Rowe got three days suspension for starting the fight and Hannah received three days suspension after Rowe returns from her suspension along with his suspension Hannah will attend two months of counseling.”

Fanta Catastrophe
Greenup County High School is known to having a good fight now and then. Tuesday September 9th, 2008, there was an incident that occurred right here in the GCHS gravel pit. It was during third and fourth lunch that Drew Hannah a senior football player at GCHS, and Allison Rowe a sophomore and varsity cheerleader at GCHS were in a brutal, savage fight.
Talking to the teacher on duty Mr. Reed, here is what he had to say.
“It was like seeing a helpless squirrel on the discovery channel getting attacked by a cheetah.”
It left Reed very tense and emotional to what had happened, seeing that Hannah was blindsided by Rowe. Hannah ended up with a six stitches going above his right eye, and Rowe walks away with her head held high accomplishing what she thought needed to be done.
Mr. Tots principle at GCHS, Tots saw that Rowe was attacking Hannah and he knew something had to be done. Mr. Tots tackling Rowe made it one of the most exhilarating things any one has ever seen. He picked up Rowe with a shock on his face wondering how a little cheerleader was beating Hannah. With disappointment, he looked at Hannah thinking, “Why is Hannah so weak?” Heading to the office Tots sat Rowe down in the seat to figure out why Rowe was so aggressive towards Hannah.
She told him, “I was tired of everything he has said to me, he has been sexually harassing me and touching me with his finger tips across my bottom.” Shelby Chaney Rowe’s best friend and a sophomore at GCHS was there to cheer her on, trying to back up Rowe she made sure Tahler Peveto a junior and varsity cheerleader at GCHS was not in her way.
As Rowe went on she was telling what Chaney told her when she came back from the water fountain hearing what Hannah and Peveto had to say. With that said Rowe was furious at what they were saying how she couldn’t play as good as a boy can. Seeing that Chaney had a bottle in her hand, she handed it to Rowe saying, “You know what needs to be done.” Rowe ends up hitting Hannah with that Fanta bottle. Tots shocked with horror and disgusts he called in Hannah to get his side of the story.
Hannah barley able to see after being knocked out, sat down with a twitch of fear. Mr. Tots looked at Hannah with disgust of what he had just heard, but with respect he listened to what Hannah had to say. “The only reason I did all of those things to her is because I don’t like her. So to make her mad I slapped her bottom running my fingers across it. I mean I hate her so much I just want to push her down in the mud!” Hannah’s best friend Peveto was talking to him about Rowe before the fight started. They were saying that she couldn’t play good as a boy can. That’s when Chaney heard them talking and went to tell Rowe.
Ashley Kielmar a junior at GCHS was a witness to the whole thing. Her side of the story was the most interesting part out of all of them.
“I was walking to lunch, and I seen Rowe and Chaney talking with each other by the pop machines, to me they didn’t look to happy. Then the bell rang to go back to class and as I was walking back to Mr. Parson’s room I seen Rowe blindside Hannah with an orange Fanta glass bottle. I didn’t know what to do, I mean with Mr. Reed to emotional to even try to pull them off of each other they had the perfect chance to go at it. Then seeing Rowe be attacked by you, it made the fight look even crazier than it really was.” Mr. Tots with pleasure in his eyes sent Ashley back to class making his decision on what to do with Rowe and Hannah.
Mr. Tots coming out of his office he seen Rowe and Hannah on two different sides of the room, looking at them both he reached a decision making Rowe Be suspended for three days first. Then when Rowe return’s Hannah is suspended for three days and two months of counseling.

How Much Is Too Much?
On September 9, at Greenup County High School, a student with a glass Fanta bottle physically assaulted Andrew Hannah, a senior at GCHS. Hannah was standing in the “gravel-pit” (an area outside of the cafeteria where student’s mingle during lunch) when the conflict took place.
Hannah’s attacker was sophomore Allison Rowe. Hannah was talking to Tahler Peveto, a good friend of his, when the attack occurred. At first, the motifs behind Rowe’s actions were unclear, but after further questioning, more was revealed.
“Drew has never liked me. He says that girls can’t fight or perform well in sports,” Rowe told GCHS Principal Christopher Miller. “He also touched me inappropriately.”
Hannah has reportedly been harassing Rowe since at least the beginning of the 08’-09’ school year. Several students, of which have all asked to remain anonymous, have stated that Hannah has always been giving Rowe a hard time during each school day. “Allison is really loud and obnoxious,” Hannah confessed to Mr. Miller. “I guess I give her a hard time to help my own self-esteem.”
The instance that took place was initially caused when Hannah and Peveto were carrying on in the “gravel-pit” about Rowe. “God I hate Allison,” is what Hannah said to Peveto. “I just want to push her down into mud.” Shelbey Cheny, a student friend of Rowe’s, overheard what Hannah had said and informed Rowe immediately after the fact. Cheney then reportedly presented Rowe with a glass Fanta bottle that had been smuggled into the school. Any container that has an origin other than the school’s facility is prohibited on campus. Rowe then confronted Hannah with the bottle in hand.
“Drew slapped me on the behind when I confronted him,” said Rowe. “Then he told me “That a boy Allison.” Rowe then struck Hannah on the head with the bottle. Mr. Reed, a teacher at GCHS, witnessed the whole conflict. Although Mr. Reed was unable to apprehend Rowe, he called for Mr. Miller who was able to gain control over her.
“Ms. Rowe received a three day suspension from school for her actions,” said Miller. “Mr. Hannah will also be suspended three days from school for harassment following Rowe’s suspension to avoid further contact.” Mr. Miller gave both students the maximum amount of discipline that is allowed to be issued by the state for these charges. Hannah will also receive in school counseling over several months for his views on women and harassment. The discipline that Cheney will receive bringing the Fanta bottle into school is still pending.
Some students and faculty members were interviewed by the administration today due to the attack. Instances like this raise questions as to whether or not the school is a safe environment for the student’s and faculty.
“For the most part, I feel safe while at school,” stated Ashley Kielmar, a student at GCHS. “There are times during lunch and between classes that I sometimes feel uncomfortable because of fighting in the school.”
There will be a district-wide student survey next month in the Greenup County School District concerning the safety of each school. Past results of surveys similar to this one have shown that student’s generally feel safe and unthreatened while in attendance at school.

Fanta Beat Down
Allison Rowe attacked student Drew Hannah with an orange flavored Fanta bottle yesterday. Two people of the opposite sex getting into a fight at school are thought of to be uncommon by some people. So we looked into the story.
We questioned Rowe to see what started all of the tension between her and Hannah. She said, “Hannah has been telling me that I cant do things boys can do. He is always picking on me and making fun of me.” We also asked her why she decided to take action into her own hands. Her response was “You cant let people pick on you or they will the rest of your life.”
We confronted Hannah about Rowe saying he picks on her. We also asked how he felt about it. He admitted, “Allison is annoying to me. I had been making fun of her a little to much.”
In between 3rd and 4th lunch, Hannah and his best friend Tayler Peveto was standing by the drinking fountain. We asked Hannah what sparked the fight. Hannah said, “I saw Shelby Chaney; Rowe’s best friend; walking by. I decided to say something to where she could hear it. I knew she would run to Rowe and tell her. So I said, “Gosh I hate Allison, I just want to push her down in the mud.”
We asked Chaney what she thought when she heard Hannah saying this about Drew. She said, “I have been hearing Drew saying Allison cant play sports because she is a girl. So it wasn’t any surprise to me, this has been going on since the beginning of the year.” We asked Chaney if she knew how Rowe got the glass Fanta Bottle. Chaney Admitted, she smuggled the bottle into school and handed it to Rowe. “I told her to do what she had to do.”

Rowe walked by Hannah and he slapped her on the bottom and said “that a boy Allison.” Peveto was standing with drew when this happened. Peveto saw Rowe looking at Drew evilly. Minutes later Drew felt something hit him in the corner of his eye. Allison began attacking Drew with the Fanta bottle, during the excitement Mr. Reed was on gravel pit duty. He saw Rowe attacking Hannah with the Fanta bottle. Mr. Reed began yelling for Mr. Principle Tots Miller.
Principle Miller saw Rowe attacking Hannah with the Fanta bottle. “My instinct was to physically remover the bottle from her hand. After I had separated them I had to try to calm down Mr. Reed who is still shaking. I do recall Peveto picked Hannah up off of the ground in the mean time.”
We asked a by standard witness Ashley Kilmar how she feel about the fights at school. She answered and said, “I think the fights are gruesome and I sometimes feel unsafe at school.”
Rowe has been suspended for three days. Drew was suspended three days after Rowe came back. Drew also had to attend two months of consoling for sexual harassment and negative views on woman. Charges will be press by Hannah, considering he had to get six stitches at the Southern Ohio Medical Center. After all the commotion of this fight justice was served.

Fight in Gravel Pit

On Tuesday September the 9th, there was a fight in the middle of the gravel pit at Greenup County School High. The fight happened in the middle of lunch 3rd and 4th lunch changes. The fight consisted of sophomore cheerleader Allison Rowe and senior football player Drew Hannah. The fight was sparked when Hannah made some sexist comments to Rowe in class. The comments became an everyday thing, the sexist comments turned to sexual harassment.
Some of the comments that Hannah made towards Rowe was about all the thing that girls cannot do, like play sports, fight, and different things. Then one day Hannah made the wrong move on the wrong girl at the wrong time. Rowe walked by Hannah and his best friend Tahler Peveto, Hannah touched Rowe in a place that she didn’t feel comfortable with him touching, her bottom and said, “That a boy Allison.”
Shelby Chaney (Rowe’s best friend) was walking with Rowe, while Hannah and Peveto were standing at the water fountain talking. Then Hannah made the sexual comments to Rowe.
“Shelby and Allison are up each others butts,” Peveto said about Chaney and Rowe being together all the time.
“The comment have been going on for a long time,” said Chaney. “So I brought her a Fanta bottle and told her that she knew what to do.”
So with that said, Rowe took the bottle and blindsided Hannah on the right side of his face knocking Hannah unconscious for a couple of seconds. When Hannah came to it was like a lion out of its cage as Rowe jumped on Hannah and started beating his face
In Mr. Reed’s words it was like a cheetah attacking a helpless squirrel. “I was on my lunch duty talking to Mr. Tots when the fight broke out. It was like watching the Animal Channel when a cheetah is attacking a helpless squirrel.”
Hannah did not like the comments that Reed said about him saying, “It’s not cool. I don’t like being called helpless.”
Hannah ended up going to Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) receiving six stitches over his right eye
“Drew crossed the line physically when he started to touch my bottom with his finger many times. So I took action,” said Rowe on the sexual harassment actions made by Hannah.
When asked why he made the comments Hannah said, “I’m a straight up Gangster.” I wouldn’t call Hannah a gangster anymore for getting beat up by a.
Ashley Kielmar an eyewitness on the scene said, “Fights in schools can be gruesome, but yet interesting.”
Hannah had some interesting comments after the fight saying, “I want to push her in the mud.”
After the fight Rowe and Hannah both went with Mr. Tots to his office to discuss their punishments.
“Allison received a three day suspension for attacking Drew. Drew also received a three-day suspension when Allison gets back to prevent any confrontations. Drew also received a two months probation for sexual harassment,” said Mr. Tots on the incident.

GCHS Takes a Turn for the Worst

On Tuesday, September 9, at Greenup County High School lunchtime took a turn for the worst. During lunch changes in the GCHS “gravel-pit” senior Drew Hannah was unexpectedly attacked by another student. Sophomore Allison Rowe, Hannah’s aggressor, violently attacked Hannah with a glass Fanta bottle.
Rowe, who at first seemed to be in the wrong, revealed that Hannah had been harassing her for several weeks before the conflict occurred, “Drew doesn’t really like me. He believes that girls can’t fight or play sports,” Rowe told authorities. “He has also repeatedly harassed me in a sexual way.” Most faculty members and several students who were in the “gravel-pit” when the incident occurred have confirmed Rowe’s allegations.
According to Shelby Chaney, a friend of Rowe who was with her before and after the conflict, Hannah was the cause of the altercation. Chaney overheard Hannah talking with a friend, junior Tahler Peveto, about Rowe while walking back to class. Chaney believes she heard Hannah say, “Gosh, I hate Allison. I want to push her in the mud!”
“I think that the comment Drew made to Tahler was wrong. He is a sexist pig,” Chaney says. “I went back into the cafeteria and told Allison what Drew had said. She was incredibly upset, so I handed her a glass Fanta bottle, which I had smuggled onto school grounds earlier that day, and told her to do what she had to.”
With encouragement from Chaney, Rowe grabbed the Fanta bottle and walked toward Hannah. Before Rowe even had a chance to confront Hannah, he began harassing her again.
“He touched my bottom with his fingers and then yelled, “That a boy, Allison!” I was so humiliated and frustrated. I just lost it. I wanted him to stop picking on me.” Rowe said. Rowe attacked Hannah and began to brutally beat him with the glass Fanta bottle. After a few minutes Mr. Reed called for Principal Tots, who quickly gained control of the situation by sustaining and handcuffing Rowe.
“I admit I was rather terrified by the whole incident,” Reed said. “I paged Principal Tots because I knew he could handle the situation, and he did just that. Seeing him throw himself onto Rowe to keep her from causing further harm to Hannah was like watching a cheetah attack a helpless squirrel on Animal Planet.”
“I had no choice but to physically sustain Rowe. I had to remove the weapon and gain control,” Principal Tots said. “I do not condone this type of behavior in my school. Rowe will receive a three day suspension for her actions. Hannah will also receive a three day suspension upon Rowe’s return to school. I am also requiring Hannah to participate in counseling due to his negative views on women.”
Hannah, who chose not to retaliate, was rushed to Southern Ohio Medical Center as soon as the confrontation was over. At SOMC Hannah was treated for bruises and also received six stitches in the head.
“I am humiliated to have been beaten up by a girl, but I do realize why the incident occurred,” Hannah said. “I’m going to follow Principal Tot’s orders and attend counseling in order to try and change my unacceptable views of women.”
It has yet to be revealed if Rowe and/or Hannah will chose to take legal action, but GCHS officials are hoping that the matter can be settled out of the courtroom. Either way, the question of school safety has become an issue. Ashley Kielmar, a GCHS junior who witnessed the conflict, said, “I don’t always feel safe at school anymore.” Kielmar is not the only GCHS student who feels this way, several other students, and even faculty members have confessed to feeling endangered during the school day. Hopefully things will change, and events such as these will not occur again.

Fight with Smuggled Fanta Bottle Results In Injury
On Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at Greenup County High School, a brutal fight involving a glass Fanta bottle broke out between third and fourth lunch. Drew Hannah, senior, was attacked by Allison Rowe, sophomore, over on going harassment issues that stemmed from the first day of school in August.
Hannah had routinely harassed Rowe, both verbally and sexually. Rowe alleged that Hannah inappropriately “touched Allison’s bottom with his fingers” on numerous occasions.
Hannah defended his behaviour, stating that he “doesn’t like Allison.”
“She’s loud and obnoxious and I hate that,” Hannah said.
The catalyst for the day’s tension came when Rowe’s close friend, Shelby Cheney, a sophomore at GCHS, overheard Hannah by the water fountains, telling Tahler Peveto, junior, that Rowe was “retarded”. Cheney relayed this information back to Rowe. Rowe decided that she wanted the harassment to stop.
“I just didn’t want him to pick on me anymore,” Rowe said.
Later in the day, Cheney overheard Hannah yet again, saying, “God, I hate Allison! I want to push her in the mud!”
Cheney alerted Rowe of the verbal attack.
Rowe walked by Hannah during lunch changes, and he slapped her on the butt while saying, “That’s a boy, Allison.”
According to eyewitness Ashley Kielmar, Rowe took a glass bottle of Fanta and repetitively struck Hannah in the face.
“She came out of nowhere,” Hannah said. “I was completely blindsided.”
Mr. Tots, principal at GCHS, broke up the “brutal beating” after Mr. Reed, a teacher at the school, could not. Reed reportedly left the scene in tears.
“I got a little emotional,” Reed said. “It was like those shows on the Animal Channel. It looked like a cheetah attacking a helpless squirrel.”
Hannah was taken to Souther Ohio Medical Center by ambulance after the attack. He was knocked unconscious by the blows, and received six stitches.
Mr. Tots was not aware of the tension escalating between Rowe and Hannah. Rowe was given a three-day suspension for her role in the attack. After learning of Hannah’s harassment, Tots also gave Hannah a three-day suspension that began after Rowe’s ended, to help “ease the tension”. Hannah also received mandatory counseling. He will attend therapy session three times every week. By the end of Hannah’s sessions, therapists hope his misogynist tendencies will be alleviated and any future hateful behaviour will be prevented.
“By no means do I condone the type of behaviour that I have witnessed,” said Mr. Tots.
Cheney later admitted to smuggling the glass Fanta bottle used as the weapon into school. She received no punishment for the act.
According to Hannah’s doctors, he is expected to make a full recovery from the beating. Some brain damage was feared, but his CAT scans were all clear of any injury. Hannah did, though, suffer some damage to his ego.
“I’m embarrassed to have been beaten up by a girl,” Hannah said.
Rowe commented that she was “permanently scared” from the incident and Hannah’s harassment.
