Journalism Activity - EXTRA CREDIT

Hey guys!

As you know, we do not publish a hard copy (paper) of our newspaper. Part of that is because of our budget - or lack thereof. We would love to do some advertising on our site to promote our program. This assignment, in addition to being worth up to 50 bonus points, will help us get an idea of how to go about advertising our paper.

Tasks:

1. Write a 200-word description of how much discretionary money that you spend in a month. Think of everything -clothes, going out to eat, entertainment, etc. - and describe how you spend it.

2. Read the following article:
http://www.ecrm-online.com/Expose/V4_10/Hittting.htm
Write a 200-word response to the article and how it relates to your discretionary spending habits.

3. Find five businesses that could advertise in the school newspaper that would interest the teenage market at our high school and write a paragraph explaining why each business would want to advertise at our school.

4. Design an ad for one of the businesses (on paper, cardboard, computer) you have listed that would entice a teen to go to that business.

1.) In a month I spend very much discretionary money. During the month I go to tumbling classes at least twenty-three times. Every time I pay a visit to the vending machine where I purchase a blue Gatorade, well sometimes it is blue, and others you hit the blue button and get a red; this averaging out to about twenty dollars. I also go shopping a lot! I do not go to big places though, just like Wal-Mart, many times. While in Wal-Mart I always purchase things that are discretionary. These items consist of toys, games, food, and more food. Other places I spend money that is not necessary would be at McDonalds. I eat there at an average of three to seven times a week, in which I spend four dollars, each visit. At least once a month I go to watch a movie at the Wheelersburg Cinema. Each movie costs a minimum of seven dollars plus money for popcorn with extra butter and a soda. Spending money discretionarily on entertainment is not something I do often. The last thing I buy unnecessarily is candy. I love candy! At school people sell candy and I buy candy. Also at places like Kel’s Market down the road from me they sell taffy, which I purchase daily for about 70 cents.
2.) The article “Hitting a New Target” I found quite interesting. Everything I read I can basically experience myself. I have experienced it and can relate to it very easily, as well as the people around me. I was very surprised to find out that youths aging from 18 to 19 have credit cards under their own names. I do not agree with this in a way because 18 may be a eligible age for some things, but I do not think it is an age where they can manage their own money; especially after going into credit card debt. I totally agree with the teens impacting beauty marketing part because I am one of those and every time I go to the cosmetics department it is full of teen girls and sometimes guys. I found it kind of strange that magazines were ranked as the number one information resource for teenagers. I do not read magazines much and I figured the top resource would be form television or the Internet. I loved reading about tweens and comparing their view of tweens to mine. Our ideas are very similar, but in another way very different. Over all of the article held my interest well, and is something I can see myself looking more into in the future.
3.) There are many places that could advertise in our school newspaper that would appeal to the readers. A few I choose are Covergirl Cosmetics, MTV or music television awards, and, Hollister or HCO. The other two I pick are American Eagle and Spencers.
Covergirl Cosmetics would be a good business to advertise in the school newspaper for many reasons. About 99% if not all of the females in the school wear makeup. Covergirl is one of the top leading brands in which they have to pick from. Females and some males would be very interested to see what new products Covergirl has created and released. High school females and males would love to be the first to find this new product and use it before anyone else.
MTV would be a very good business to advertise in the school newspaper because it is watched by every person I know and I know almost everyone in the school. It applies to the teens’ interests because on MTV there are teens that are facing problems like we do in our daily lives. Students like to see this and learn how to deal with things. Also MTV advertises an against drugs and alcohol program called “Above the Influence,” which would be good to advertise in our paper to help kids get over their addictions.
Hollister is also a very good business to advertise in our school newspaper. This is because it is a clothing store that feeds about everyone’s taste. Walking around school you can see Hollister already advertised on many students’ bodies, this being taken in the form of shirts, pants, belts, jackets, and others. HCO would be a great business to advertise because people love seeing the new merchandise that they will soon be able to purchase.
With American Eagle it is the same as Hollister. American Eagle would be a good place to advertise in our newspaper because it not only has great clothes like Hollister, but it is more affordable. It is also a local place that just about every student can make it to, which makes it more suitable. We should advertise American Eagle so students can see that cheaper isn’t always bad.
Lastly is Spencers. Spencers is not exactly an appropriate place to advertise in the school newspaper, but it is a business that most everyone can have fun with. At this age students think about more mature things than they use to and this store allows you to use your newly matured mind to laugh at very much. Many students would read about Spencers to see what funny pranks and jokes they can use on a daily basis. These are the five businesses I would advertise in the school newspaper.
4.) This one will be done on computer paper and turned into you Mr. Parsons.

1) I spend around 70 to 80 dollars a month. I usually get paid 30 dollars every two weeks I get 60 dollars a month plus my left over lunch money. I go the mall two or three times a month and I either eat at the food court, which the total cost varies depending on what you order but usually between two and ten, and at fiesta bravo and the total cost also varied between five dollars and 17 dollars. I spend about 15 dollars on just food but that not including what I buy at the stores if I buy anything. I go to almost every store in the mall at least twice in one day; I buy something from almost all the stores I go into. I spend about 50 dollars just in the mall.
I spend 20 dollars every month to buy my phone card for my phone. /after all that I have maybe not even ten dollars left for whatever I need it for. Depends on if I’m supposed to get paid that week I save it occasionally but more then likely I spend it. I can keep money, I always try to find a reason to spend it and if I do decide to keep it, I put it in the bank with my other money that I’m saving.

2) The article relates to my spending habits because I more than likely spend quite a lot of money during a years time however more than half of it comes from my parents well actually almost all of it comes from my parents. I agree that we are independent but some of us are not able to get a job to get paid so we rely on are parents for money. I also agree that we are the wealthiest group in America because we always want something and that requires money to buy it. We usually get persuaded into buying products from magazine articles, TV, computer and even in the mail. The mail man is always giving sales add or 15 to 25% off a particular store that you want something from and you want it. Teenagers basically want everything we can get are hands on, no matter what the cost.

3) Five businesses that can advertise in the schools newspaper that would interest the teenage population is FYE (for your entertainment) because everyone like’s music, movies and games. They would want to be the first ones to know what new releases they have and that would involve the paper.
Spencer’s gifts would be a good business not all of it contents are appropriate but some are however and everyone well almost everyone shops there so a lot of people would read the newspaper to see what they have in stock.
Vanity because most females shop there and some men go there to shop for there girlfriends and vanity is always getting something new in or lowering the prices.
Hot topic would be another good business to advertise because it is popular despite it’s look and a lot of people shop there for many different items be it make up or clothes.

4)The ad is my blogger photo.

1. I really don't spend any money -- it's actually my mom's, grandma's, grandpa's, Josh's, etc. However, it's still quite a lot. How much I spend each month varies. For example, during the summer and when we have breaks from school, I spend more money because I have more free time. In the past month, I've went out at least once or twice a week, whether it be going to the movies or out to eat. I've been to the movies two or three times, which comes out to be about $20 or so. I've been out to eat numerous times in the past month, usually several times a week, so that probably equals up to at least $100, if not more. I rent a movie probably every other day, and I've bought a few different books within the past month. I also spend a lot of money on snacks. Whenever I'm out, I'll stop and get a drink or I'll buy candy. Also, I spend an incredible amount of money at Wal-Mart each month. Every time I'm in there, I end up getting something -- usually new makeup or a magazine. I go shopping a couple times a month, but this month, everything that I've bought is for Christmas. Recently, I've bought -- well Mom bought -- a couple hundred dollars in stuff for me to give other people for Christmas. Overall though, most of the money I spend each month is usually on movies and food.

2. I can definitely relate to the article, "Hitting A New Target." Like I mentioned in the previous question, I never spend my own money - just like the writer mentions in the article. I just turned 16 a couple months ago, so I wasn't even able to get a job until recently, but I still don't have one. I never really spend my own money because I don't have an income. Therefore, my mom usually gives me money or whatever I need and usually for what I want. Really, the only time I ever have my own money is if I receive some for a holiday, like my birthday or Christmas. It's the same way for most of my friends, too. We have no bills to pay each month, so we all get to spend their money on whatever we want. A lot of the time it is things in "beauty marketing" -- makeup, hair products, etc -- especially when it comes to teen girls. Teens are surrounded by advertising everyday and are pressured to buy products to try to look like these people in ads. At school, almost everyone wants to fit in and have the best you can buy, and most parents are willing to pay that price. Whenever there are new things coming out everyday, it's hard to keep up, and teens are forced to constantly spend their money if they want to stay up to date.

3.
- Covergirl cosmetics. This would be a big one for teen girls at our school. Girls constantly want to make themselves look better and older, so we're constantly buying beauty products in order to do so. I guarantee that every female in our school wears makeup at one point during the school year, so advertising to our students would definitely benefit the company.
-Abercrombie & Fitch. Teens want to have the best clothes, and Abercrombie is supposed to be one of the top brands for teens. Their ads are always of young, beautiful people, and everyone strives to be that. I see a lot of people throughout the school day wearing this brand, so I know that people would be interested in the ad.
-Hot Topic. Hot Topic is more a gothic/punk store, but there are definitely people at our school that would be interested in the ad. Right now, the store is selling a lot of Twilight merchandise, so most of the girls in the school would be interested in the ad especially if they showed that they had that merchandise. They also sell CDs, posters, band shirts, and lots of other things that teens like.
-Game Stop. Guys, especially teen guys, always talk about the newest video games and systems. Seeing an ad for a video game store would catch their attention.
-Hollister. Hollister is pretty much the cheaper version of Abercrombie, but it’s still considered to be one of the “top brands” for teens. Their ads are about like Abercrombie’s, and show young people on the beach, etc. Teens are always attracted to these ads, because they want to look like that.
